Homestake Ranch is located west of Wolsey, South Dakota and operated by 5th generation owners Keith and Amanda Larsen. In 1910, Keith's great-great-grandfather obtained the ranch when he traded his blacksmith shop in Iowa and began raising cattle. Throughout the 1950's, Keith's grandfather Harlow Larsen focused on breeding purebred Herefords. Upon his return from college in the early 1970’s, Keith's father Tony Larsen began integrating registered Simmental cattle. Keith purchased his first Red Angus females in 1998 as a 4-H project and a way to diversify the herd. Amanda grew up in Lake Benton, MN and has been involved with Red Angus cattle her whole life exhibiting cattle with her family at the county, state, and national levels. Keith and Amanda first met at the 2002 South Dakota State Fair while showing cattle in the Junior Red Angus Show. Both are active on the South Dakota Red Angus Association Board of Directors and volunteer with Beadle County 4-H and Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Wessington, SD. Amanda also works full time as a crop insurance specialist at an agency near Huron, SD.
Homestake Ranch consists of approximately 2,100 acres in western Beadle County with 1,000 tillable for corn, soybeans, and alfalfa and the remaining grazed as pasture. We currently run 225 head of registered Red Angus and Simmental cows and continue to improve the genetics each year through the extensive use of AI and embryo transfer. Some of our recent purchases include cattle from Milk Creek Reds, Lazy J Bar Ranch, Gill Red Angus, Loosli Red Angus, Eichacker Simmental, Caraway Red Angus Ranch, and Fehrman Family Red Angus. In 2013 we purchased a herd of 25 boer nanny goats and sell the offspring to local 4-H members to exhibit at Achievement Days and State Fair. We are a true “family ranch” with all of the work being done by Keith, Amanda and Tony and our nephew Lane who works for us during the summer AI and haying season. Each spring, bulls and heifers are marketed at area consignment sales including the Black Hills Stock Show, Sioux Empire Farm Show, Philip Bull Days, and the Watertown Winter Farm Show. On March 26, 2015 we will host our 1st Annual Production Sale at Huron Continental Marketing in Huron, SD with Gimbel Family Angus.
